Q. Why did the filmmakers decided to have
Siku be an ice sculptor? How does that choice of profession and type of art
relate to the themes in the film?
Vincente
and Siku are Environment Refugees. They lost almost everything because of
melting ice. The filmmakers want to show us how they overcome their trauma about ice.
At the first, Siku is an ice sculptor. It looks contradiction;
however, I think it is a kind of reconciliation. Even though he lost his precious things by melting ice, but he has got good
memories about ice. He sculpts ice, thereby he overcome his bad experience. The
second, Vincente has some hostilities of ice, so he destroyed Siku’s arts and
ice cubes. When Siku teaches how to make ice sculpture to Vincente the boy
throw the ice. Siku looks at that and he does same action. It looks they throw their
trauma. The last is that finally, Vincente remembers his happiness memories.
Siku shows an action which is rubbing the ice on his face. Vincente looks at that,
and he follows that action. In the end, he recalls his good experience before he becomes an environment refugee.
Excellent development here. I agree with your analysis that Siku overcomes his past by attempting to control the very thing (ice) that destroyed his home and family.
